The guitar is another very versatile instrument. In the United States, this instrument's versatility is right behind the piano in what it can do. You can play single note melodies, or solos done with double notes (Lead guitar), rhythm guitar, or chords with melody (chord solos).

There are several totally different choices of guitars. These would include the electric solid body, the electric jazz or arched top, acoustic flat top with or with out electronics and the classical guitar with nylon strings. Each of these styles offer their own specialty, which contribute to the sound and style of play. The guitar can be played with pick, pick and fingers and finger style. In addition to the combinations we have discussed there are the many electronic devices for guitar use that can add so much more variations and dimension to the guitar sound.

The solid body electric is generally strung with lighter gauge strings than the acoustic guitars. The reason for this is so you can bend the strings for one or more notes at a time to get the wailing or other sounds associated with rock, blues, country etc. In addition the volume of sound is amplified and you don't need the heavier strings the acoustic guitar will need to produce the volume of sound to be effective. The acoustic flat top guitar is generally used for strumming chords for rhythm or for playing chords with fingers, like in folk music. The acoustic guitar is used in country, blues, folk, mellow rock etc. The arched top jazz guitar is more mellow and warmer sounding than than the flat top guitar. This guitar is generally hand carved like a violin. It is used for playing rhythm, or to play the melody of a song, or chord solos which adds its own harmony. This type of guitar is used in Jazz, dance bands, orchestras, etc.

The musical styles I teach are rock, blues, funk, R&B, rockabilly, jazz, classical, folk, country, bluegrass, reggae, gospel, Latin, Brazilian, metal, styles, Broadway, pop, and more!

Greg Madison Music Studio is a place where continual teaching improvement, expert music instruction and quality customer service are the highest priorities. I provide the very best instruction available through innovative teaching methods, fun learning concepts and an ongoing expansion of services, including student teacher jams and ensemble classes. I provide musical experiences that are versatile, fun and repeatedly elevate my students' passion and desire for playing music.

Group jam/theory sessions with 4 to 9 students are available in different styles of music with other students of same abilities two times a year. The instruments in these sessions will depend on the student ability and availability These sessions are for people who have played with me and demonstrated that they have the knowledge, ability, dexterity, and can play in time. Another prerequisite is that they have had the basic writing of music notation with us prior to the start of these jam/theory classes. The first level type class works with written music or riff type play in different styles. The more advanced classes are improvisation classes in blues, rock, jazz etc.
