In most cases, a person will be able to play a few very nice sounding rock beats in four to eight weeks. This will not be by rote. It will be with the understand of how to count and keep time while reading music first and then by rote when the students have the rhythms memorized. After learning rhythms, many of them can be interchanged while playing. The rhythms are like vocabulary. The more words you know, the more exact and expressive you can be in what you want to say. Because of the amount of instruments I play and the equipment in the upstairs and downstairs studio I can play various instruments with the drum student once they have enough knowledge on the drums. Now the student can play in a small band setting while taking lessons.

Out of the seventeen plus instruments that I play and teach, this instrument gives the quickest rewards in terms of personal satisfaction. In order to master the drums, you could continue to study for the rest of your life. As you play more, you will develop great speed, technique and a vast amount of musical knowledge. This knowledge will allow you to play with never ending ideas in many different styles of music.

What makes the drums more unique over other instruments is the way you can customize the make up of the set. You can decide how many drums and the sizes you want in your set, or what kind of wood you want to determine your sound. You can decide on how many cymbals, sizes, types, and their thickness. Various types and sizes of cow bells and wood block can also be added to the set. As an experience player you could look into the types of drum heads their thicknesses etc for a more personal type of sound you like.

Additional choices that make drumming unique: You can play the drums with wood tip and nylon tip sticks, or with brushes and mallets. There are brushes made of wire, nylon, plastic, bundled wood, and plastic dowels. Mallets are made in different sizes and construction. Bass drum foot pedal beaters come in felt, plastic wood, and rubber. You can have double bass drums.

  1. A pair of matched drum sticks appropriate for you hand size and style of music.
  2. A practice pad to use for practicing the rudiments with their sticks.
  3. A pad stand to attach the practice pad so the pad can be adjusted to the right height and can be tilted as desired. This pad simulates the snare drum
  4. A music stand to hold their music in a comfortable way for practicing the rudiments from sheet music or books.
  5. A drum throne that can be adjustable to the height that you need. This item is not a must but adds to the student's comfort

  1. Snare drum and stand
  2. Hi hat stand and 2 14" cymbals
  3. Bass drum
  4. Additional cymbals and or other drums based on your preference.

Greg Madison Music Studio is a place where continual teaching improvement, expert music instruction and quality customer service are the highest priorities. I provide the very best instruction available through innovative teaching methods, fun learning concepts and an ongoing expansion of services, including student teacher jams and ensemble classes. I provide musical experiences that are versatile, fun and repeatedly elevate my students' passion and desire for playing music.

Group jam/theory sessions with 4 to 9 students are available in different styles of music with other students of same abilities two times a year. The instruments in these sessions will depend on the student ability and availability. These sessions are for people who have played with me and demonstrated that they have the knowledge, ability, dexterity, and can play in time. Another prerequisite is that they have had the basic writing of music notation with us prior to the start of these jam/theory classes. The first level type class works with written music or riff type play in different styles. The more advanced classes are improvisation classes in blues, rock, jazz etc.
