Cellos are available in seven sizes to allow students from five years of age and up through adults to be fitted properly. Five of the seven sizes are the most popular. Cellos are used in orchestras, chamber groups, and bands, to play classical, pop, and show tunes mostly. This instrument could also be used in country, bluegrass, new wave, rock, jazz. etc. Cellos are available in acoustic style and can be amplified with the use of a pickup.
Cellos can be rented, or purchased. Reliable student cellos can be purchased from eight-hundred dollars and up. The least expensive cellos in most places are not shop adjusted after stores receive them. These lower cost cellos would need to be carefully selected by a knowledgeable person to make sure that they would be acceptable enough to take lessons on. The more expensive cellos generally have been shop adjusted in a more careful way. We shop adjust even the less expensive cellos we sell. Depending where you purchase or rent, any cello can be shop adjusted. If you get your cello from us, they will always be shop adjusted. Buying a cello for a five year old is questionable due to the higher risk that they may loose interest in a short time. Also as a child grows they would need to go to the next size cello up. The piano or keyboard is a better choice for this age student for the following reasons. The cello strings have tension on them and a student needs the strength and coordination to press them down. Another factor is that the strings dig into the fingers and make them slightly sore at first. It is hard for some students this young to accept this situation. The problem with the slightly sore fingers will go away after about seven to ten days and will not be a problem after that as long as they continue to play at least two days a week thereafter.

Group jam/theory sessions with 4 to 9 students are available in different styles of music with other students of same abilities two times a year. The instruments in these sessions will depend on the student ability and availability These sessions are for people who have played with me and demonstrated that they have the knowledge, ability, dexterity, and can play in time. Another prerequisite is that they have had the basic writing of music notation lessons with me prior to the start of these jam/theory classes. The first level class works with written music or riff type play in different styles. The more advanced classes are improvisation classes in blues, rock, jazz etc.
